When you set the siding on the support bar you will have an overlap of 1-1/4 1-3/8 or 1-1/2 depending on the model that you purchase. After placing a nail in the siding above the tool you just rotate the support bar 90 deg to allow the tool to be released. Their is a little ramp effect where the bar locks in above the urethane bumper allowing it to fall away from the plank It works pretty slick.

The design tends to hold the plank close to the building without actually clamping it. Also good on a breezy day but use common sense.
